This is boutique winemaking at its best. The difficult Nebbiolo grape (of Barolo fame) is not widely grown in Australia, but this is a fab example. Produced for early drinking, the wine is oozing with juicy, ripe red fruits, smokey date flavours and enticingly succulent texture. A real ‘beaut’.
Tasting Note : Bright cherry, blackberry and strawberry fruit dominate the nose and palate. The wine is beautifully textured, with juicy red fruits, hints of dried fruit, mocha and spice.
Food Pairing : Tomato-based pasta; simply grilled red meats; ripe cheeses; roasted aubergine.
More info : You don’t often find Nebbiolo outside Italy, where it produces the very fine, structured, long-lived wines of Barolo. This excellent Australian example is from a single vineyard site with low-yielding soils, cooling breezes from the nearby Lake Alexandrina and the sea and long, warm, sunny autumn days. The vines are hand-pruned and hand-harvested before being de-stemmed, foot-crushed (yes!), and allowed to ferment naturally with wild yeasts. It then spends 10 months in seasoned French barriques before being bottled without filtration – so look out for a bit of natural sediment. The vines are treated with only natural fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides. This is a very natural product.
Winery : Attilio and Rosa Freschi emigrated from Veneto to Australia in 1954, where they settled in the Langhorne Creek area. Passionate about wine, Attilio planted a small vineyard to produce wine for their own table and to share with family and friends. The wines were so good that their reputation grew, and son David was inspired to become an oenologist. Having served his time in New Zealand and Italy, David returned to the family winery in 1997, where he has pursued his ambition to produce premium single-vineyard wines. His philosophy is to produce the wines in harmony in nature, and the products reflect all of his care and attention to detail.
