Vina Tobia, Blanco, DO Rioja

Variety: 80% Viura, 20% Verdejo

Vintage: 2014

Region: Rioja DOCa, Spain

Vineyard and Viticulture:

The 2014 vintage will be remembered for the later maturing of grapes, which showed good health, excellent acidity and aromatics.  The resulting wine is also less rich in sugar than recent vintages. The various vineyards face South, South-West and North-East benefitting from the gentle warmth of the rising sun. The vines' average 6 - 55 years old and are planted on clay and limestone soils. Trellis and goblet training aim to increase vine stress. The average altitude is 500 - 550 meters, with a planting density of 2500-4000 vines per hectare, producing low yields of 54 hl/ha. Grapes were harvested from multiple sites in La Rioja between late September and early October 2014.

After manual sorting at the vineyard, grapes were de-stemmed and left to macerate in their skins for 24 hours at 10°C. A pneumatic horizontal press was used before fermentation was started with cultured yeast in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation lasted for 15 days between 13- 14°C. The wine was matured for 1 month in fibre glass tanks and then rested on its fine lees for a month with battonage occurring twice a week. The wine was fined and filtered before bottling.
