Vina Tobia, Tinto, DO Rioja

Variety: 50% Tempranillo, 50% Garnacha

Vintage: 2014

Region: Rioja DOCa, Spain

Vineyard and Viticulture:

This vintage matured later than usual, with very uneven ripening from vineyard to others. It was a very difficult year and the selection of grapes from the various vineyards was fundamental. Grapes were harvested at the end of September and early October from multiple sites of the Rioja Baja. The various vineyards are facing North West with an average altitude of 450- 550 meters. The vines are 15- 30 years old and are planted on sandy loam with clay and limestone layers. This type of soil combined with the trellis system produces ideal ripening conditions for the grapes. The planting density is 3500 vines per hectare, producing low yields of 50 hl/ha.

Grapes were de-stemmed and a pneumatic horizontal press was used to release the juice. Pre-fermentation maceration lasted for 2 days at about 16 °C. Fermentation was started with wild yeast in stainless steel tanks, and it lasted for 7 days at 25°C. Following fermentation, the wine rested on its fine lees for a month while battonage was carried out once a week to add extra complexity. This was followed by malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine was fined, filtered and bottled.
