Vineyard and Viticulture:
The estate vineyard is located on the Te Awanga coast in Hawke’s Bay. The maritime climate and afternoon sea breeze allows for ripening of the grapes whilst preserving a lively acidity. The vineyard is north facing located at just 3m a.s.l. The soils are composed of free draining river shingle. The average age of vines is 9 years. Density of planting is 2525 vines/ha. Vines are trained using a vertical shoot positioning system with yields of approx. 60 hl/ha. 100% manual harvest.
After 10 separate picks, the selected fruit was whole-bunch gently pressed using a membrane press. Fermented using indigenous wild yeast strains at a controlled temperature of 14-17°C for 21 - 30 days. Following the alcoholic fermentation the wine remained on its fine lees for 6 months with monthly battonage. No malolactic fermentation. Matured in bottle for 8 months prior to release.
A sophisticated wine with aromas of citrus blossom, lemon verbena and wild herbs. The wine shows far more passion fruit and nettle characters than the previous cooler vintages. It has a rich and generous palate with refreshing acidity giving a clean and long finish.
Great on its own or with seafood, white fish and meats or white sauce pasta dishes.
