Leconfield, Chardonnay, Coonawarra

Bright medium straw with attractive green tints

The aroma has elements of ripe peach and lemons complexed with a nuttiness through yeast contact during barrel fermentation.

Fine stone fruit flavours with elegant yet persistent peachy flavours that finish cleanly with a tight, but soft, acidity.

Though wonderful on its own, this wine makes an excellent accompaniment to chicken, seafood and light red meat dishes. Try it with a Carpaccio of beef.

This full flavoured wine will gain dimension in its first two years and the soft acidity will see it mature over the next four to six years.

The Leconfield Coonawarra estate was established in 1974 by one of Australia’s most talented winemakers, Sydney Hamilton. In the subsequent four decades, the vineyard has become famous for the distinctive wines it produces. The Chardonnay sits alongside Riesling, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon to make our classic style of wines.

Our Chardonnay vineyard was planted in 1985 and 1988. Coonawarra's white wines are wonderfully elegant, fine and invite winemakers to express their style. In 2012 we chose from several techniques and selected from the barrels to produce this wine. After cold settling, the wine was inoculated with yeast and a portion was immediately run into oak for barrel fermentation with initial frequent battonage during fermentation and less frequent lees stirring as the wine matured. A second portion was fermented using its indigenous yeast. The wine was allowed to undergo partial malo-lactic fermentation while on yeast lees. We have produced a modern style of chardonnay which has finesse and elegance but with a highlight of very fine French oak. The wine received a light fining before bottling in February 2013.
