Mooiplaas, The Bean, Pinotage, Stellenbosch

Tasting Notes:

The Bean Pinotage is an excellent example of Pinotage South African red wine. This wine is an approachable, modern style of Pinotage, full of coffee and chocolate notes from oak ageing in toasted French oak barrels. Fine, silky tannins integrate well with coffee and chocolate flavours resulting in a smooth, easy drinking wine.

Mooiplaas, situated in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch and set amongst majestic mountains and fertile valleys surrounded by two mighty oceans is a Wine Estate and Private Nature Reserve boasting pristine natural beauty. The estate covers an area of 250 hectares, of which approximately 100 hectares dedicated to vineyards.

The grapes are all harvested by hand, and this allows an extra step of quality control in the production process as any damaged bunches can be removed. The grapes are then crushed wiith over night skin contact allowed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks.

The history of the farm dates back to 1806, with the Manor House on the Estate as a rare example of the Cape Dutch building style: in the form of the letter H with a neo-classical gable, with the date 1833 engraved to indicate its impressive heritage. In 1989, the Manor House was declared a National Monument.

Whilst the estate produce excellent wines using traditional techniques, they also produce űber-modern wines.  The Collection Series is a consumer friendly range that combines innovative packaging (that has terrific shelf stand-out), with modern winemaking techniques.  The wines themselves are well thought out and cleverly draw out the key flavour profiles of each wine, to match the name of each wine and the packaging.
