Vintage: 2011

Region: Empordà, Spain

Vineyard and Viticulture:

Empordà is a small but significant DO which lies in the far northeastern corner of Catalunya. 5 Fincas is so-called because the grapes are taken from five of Perelada’s estates (fincas) in the region. The climate varies according to the different vineyard areas, but generally speaking coastal areas have a Mediterranean climate, sometimes with strong winds, while inland areas have climates with mixed Mediterranean and continental influences. The vines average 25 years old and are planted on alluvial, sandy, clay soils. Grapes are harvested by hand and machine late Sept to Mid October.

Grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and fermented separately. Prefermentation maceration lasts 24 hours at 15°C. Fermented in stainless steel tanks for 12 days at 24°C. A 10 day post fermentation maceration follows at 15-18°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine is matured for 22 months in 225L barrels  (French oak and American oak of which 50% are 1 to 5 year old barrels). The wine is fined, filtered and blended and once bottled it is matured in bottle for additional 12 months prior to release.

Tasting Notes:

Intense aromas of ripe fruit, with spicy and roasted notes. It is fleshy, well-structured wine with balsamic notes. It has a very fresh acidity and silky tannins. This is a well-balanced, creamy wine, pleasant in the mouth, with a long finish.

Serving Suggestion:

This complex wine is an ideal pairing for red meats and barbecues
