Villa Wolf Pinot Gris, Pfalz, Case of 6 bottlesVilla Wolf
Country : Germany
Grape Variety : Pinot Gris
Case of 6 bottles
I know, people are still wary of Germany wines, but this is not what you expect. A honeyed, succulent, silky, exotic white, with delicious flavours of tangerine and citrussy crispness. A 'must try'.
Tasting Note : Exotic fruits and hints of honeysuckle on the nose. The palate is juicy and fresh, with flavours of orange peel, apricot and hints of blossom. The finish is crisp and lifted and just 'off-dry'.
Food Pairing : Sushi; pasta with chicken; summer salads; Thai curries.
More info : Some of us at Great Wine Online are old enough to remember the flood of cheap, sugary Liebfraumilch which engulfed the UK market in the early 80s. This tainted the reputation of German wines as a whole, and the category has never fully recovered. However, there are some really fabulous wines being produced in these cool, Northern climes, so we have decided to introduce a small range from the Pfalz region for you to try. This Pinot Gris is more aligned to an Alsace in style than Northern Italian Pinot Grigio, packed with exotic flavours and character.
Winery : Founded in 1756, the Villa Wolf estate was purchased by Ernst Loosen in 1996. He overhauled the vineyards and winemaking process, and with the introduction in 2011 of young winemaking team, Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer, he has really put this estate on the map. The vines are grown following sustainable viticultural practices and organic viticulture, which not only protects the environment but also produces healthier grapes. The winemaking is carried out in the traditional way with minimalist intervention. Being from the warm, dry Pfalz area, the wines are produced in a drier, fuller-bodied style than most other German wines.
