White Mischief Grüner Veltliner, Adelaide Hills

Country : Australia

Grape Variety : Grüner Veltliner

Not a typo, we really do mean Australia (not Austria)! This is fabulous Grüner Veltliner from a boutique winery in the Adelaide Hills. Juicy, complex and ripe, absolutely oozing with stone fruits, grapefruit, lemon and spice. A really succulent mouthful.

Tasting Note : Bags of wonderful stone fruits and spice on the nose. The palate is ripe, full and silky-textured, intensely fruit-filled, with citrus fruits, peaches and spice.

Food Pairing : Pan-fried seabass; Thai prawn curry; langoustines with aioli; vegetable kebabs.

More info : Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson first introduced Grüner Veltliner to Australia in 2006, when they imported three different clones from Austria. Why plant this grape variety? The red slate soils with their quartz and ironstone are perfect for imparting a characteristic minerality, whilst the great diurnal variation (ie difference in temperature between day and night) mirrors the growing conditions in Austria, allowing the grapes to develop complex flavours. The distinctive, eye-catching label represents the patchwork of vineyards, orchards and fields of the Adelaide Hills.

Winery : Established in 1997 by Larry Jacobs, formerly of Mulderbosch Vineyards in South Africa, and Marc Dobson who had built a career in advertising copywriting, Hahndorf Hill is a small 6-hectare estate on the edge of the historic Hahndorf village. Larry and Marc have pioneered Austrian grape varieties in the Adelaide Hills, and since they first launched their Grüner Veltliner in 2010 have won more awards than we are able to list here! This is very much a small volume, personal, boutique winery offering wines of character, style and charisma.
