Description
This wine is from the wine region of Štajerska, in the extreme northeast of Slovenia (near the Austrian/ Hungarian borders). The wine maker is Matija Žerjav, known simply as Matic to his friends and family. He owns Matic Wines and is young Slovenian 3rd generation winemaker following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. Matic has his own specific style, producing natural wines with wild yeast under sustainable conditions. Matic chooses to farm his 9 hectares of land using all organic and biodynamic methods, prefering these methods because he firmly believes this is how wine should be made (he is not interested in the fact that is it fashipbale to do so!). He wants his children to be able to play in the vineyard and someday, should they choose, he would be happy to see them follow in his footsteps and farm the same land, hills, and valleys.
Petillant Naturel, or “Pet Nat”, as it affectionately known, is a natural sparkling wine whose style has recently become popular again. The wine is fermented in the bottle with the use of natural yeasts. This style of winemaking, although considered more “trendy” is actually one of the most ancient wine making methods known.
The wine has undergone fermentation in the bottle, and therefore is a little cloudy and there is a taste of the residual yeasts and sugars.
We taste citrus fruits (lemons and limes) with slight bready notes reminiscent of beer too . Every bottle is individually fermented and Maitic’s “dosage” put in so every bottle is different. There is a cloudiness which is totally natural. Matic describes this wine as “one funky piece of winemaking!”
