A rich, smokey red from the Simonsig estate in the Stellenbosch wine producing region. Blackcurranty Cabernet Sauvignon is balanced by dark, spicy Shiraz to give a gutsy, full-bodied, characterful wine.
Tasting Note : Full fruit on the nose with spicy notes. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, with ripe black fruits, warm spice and smokey oak notes.
Food Pairing : Char-grilled red meats, sausages, burgers, veggie sausages (if you must!). This wine over-delivers at its price, so roll it out at dinner parties and everyone will love it.
More info : Due – to some extent – to the exchange rate, South African wines offer some of the best value for money on the market at the moment. This is an authentic estate wine produced by the Malan family, and this comes through in the quality and individual character of the wine. Careful vineyard management and skillful winemaking result in a fab red which is great for all sorts of occasions, from barbecues to more formal dinners. The favourable Stellenbosch climate ensures that the grapes ripen fully giving wines of concentration and balance.
Winery : The Malan family’s winemaking heritage dates back to 1688, when French Huguenot Jacques Malan arrived in South Africa. More recently it was the late Frans Malan who established Simonsig Estate, crafting high quality wines and pioneering innovations such as Cape sparkling wine. Current generation, brothers Francois and Johan, manage the vineyards and cellar respectively and continue the family traditions of quality, sustainability and social responsibility. Simonsig has won more awards than you can shake a stick at, but are constantly striving for improvement. These wines have true provenance and authenticity; their roots are literally in the ancient soils around the Simonsberg Mountain.
