Description
Country : Sauvignon/Semillon
Grape Varieties : Sauvignon; Semillon
Delicious estate-bottled South African Sauvignon. Refreshing tropical fruit and gooseberries, with hints of crunchy green pepper and citrus fruits. It’s the crisp Sauvignon that dominates the blend, the Semillon lends roundness and balance.
Tasting Note : Very fresh tropical fruits on the nose, with floral hints. On the palate the wine is bursting with fruit, very crisp, with notes of green pepper, lemons, and kiwi.
Food Pairing : prawn salad; barbecued fish; goat’s cheese; in the garden on a sunny day.
More info : Sauvignon/Semillon is the classic Bordeaux blend, and there is good reason why these two grape varieties are often combined. The Sauvignon brings lifted aromatics and zestiness, the Semillon rounds out the mid palate and brings depth to the wine. The Malan family of Simonsig Estate plant their white varieties on the cooler, south-facing slopes (remember they are in the Southern Hemisphere!) to ensure freshness in the wine. The grapes are picked in the cool of the morning, and fermented at very low temperatures to enhance fruit intensity. The resulting wine is mouth-tinglingy crisp and delicious.
Winery : The Malan family’s winemaking heritage dates back to 1688, when French Huguenot Jacques Malan arrived in South Africa. More recently it was the late Frans Malan who established Simonsig Estate, crafting high quality wines and pioneering innovations such as Cape sparkling wine. Current generation, brothers Francois and Johan, manage the vineyards and cellar respectively and continue the family traditions of quality, sustainability and social responsibility. Simonsig has won more awards than you can shake a stick at, but are constantly striving for improvement. These wines have true provenance and authenticity; their roots are literally in the ancient soils around the Simonsberg Mountain.
