BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS MONFIL S.L. is a company that belongs to the Mateo family, with a long tradition in the wine world accross three gerenations. It was set up in 1943 by Victor Mateo. Before that the family, since the beginning of the century, has been dedicated to the production od spirits and wine, but not under their own name.
The brand of Monfil comes from the surname of the current generation’s great – grandmother Carmen Monfil. Her family was the owner of large vineyards in Cariñena. Nowadays the family has his own vineyards with wines from the grape varieties of garnacha, tempranillo, cariñena, syrah and macabeo.
Victor Mateo is the President of the company and since 2000 has been the Chairman of the Association of Managers of Aragon´s Wine. The King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, granted him the Agricultural Merit Order with the title of “Commander”.
The vineyards with an area of approximately 22 hectares, where the grape varieties Garnacha and Tempranillo are grown, is located in the northeast of Spain, Capital of Aragon region and Zaragoza province, on the Ebro river.
Zaragoza is the fifth largest city in Spain, with over 600,000 inhabitants.
