Tasting Note : Freshness and warmth characterise the aromas. On the palate the wine displays a soft creaminess of texture, with flavours of ripe, fresh peach, citrus fruits and an elegant, mineral finish.
Food Pairing : Perfect with grilled white fish, shellfish, summer salads or as an aperitif with roasted almonds.
More info : Austrian wine has never really made an impact on the UK market, perhaps a throw-back to the scandal that rocked the industry back in the 1980s, but this country produces some truly fabulous gems. The hot, sunny summers and cold winters in this land-locked country are ideal for vine growing, and their favoured grape varieties, including Gruner Veltliner, thrive in these conditions. If you like the clean, crisp, fruit-driven qualities of a Sauvignon, but fancy a little bit more elegance and minerality, or even just a bit of a change, this could be the ideal wine for you. It is one of our buyer’s favourites, if that’s anything to go by!
Winery : Still family-owned and run, this dynamic estate is constantly striving to produce wines that reflect their unique terroir in Burgenland. When you think of Austria, Alpine peaks and ski slopes tend to come to mind, but this area close to the border with Hungary is characterised by rolling hills, and benefits from the moderating influence of the nearby Neusiedlersee (Neisiedl Lake).
The Höpler family moved their operation to a brand new, ultra-modern facility in 2004 to facilitate production from their 50 hectares of vineyards. Their philosophy is to let the wines mature at their own pace and in their own way to develop harmony, character and their own identity. The family are passionate about their products and this is expressed in the purity and authenticity of their wines.
